How Do I Try Sugaring Hair Removal?

Developed as an old middle-eastern practice, sugaring hair removal is certainly one of the most organic methods of removing the hair follicle from the root. Made only from natural substances such as water, sugar, and lemon juice, sugaring actually ends up being much less painful than wax, primarily due to the fact that it doesn’t stick to the skin anywhere near as much. Indeed, there are few downsides to sugaring and it can be one of the lowest cost methods of hair removal (the ingredients to make your own sugar paste can be less than a couple of bucks).

In order to begin, you’ll need to make the paste. Simply combine 2 cups white sugar, 1/4 cup lemon juice, and 1/4 cup water in a heavy sauce pan over medium-high heat. Keep stirring to ensure that it doesn’t stick to the bottom. Let the ingredients come to a boil and then turn the heat down to low-medium and simmer for 25 minutes. It’s important that you leave it for this exact length, failure to cook the sugar long enough will result in very sticky, unworkable paste. You’ll know the sugar is ready when it turns a very dark amber color – just imagine really dark caramel and that’s the color you want.

Now that you have your paste, you’re ready to perform the sugaring hair removal process. Simply clean the area from which you want to remove the hair and apply a very small amount of baby powder. Then, take a blob of room temperature sugaring paste and roll it into a small ball. Don’t use a lot of force, just roll it around a bit to warm it up and also make it easier to apply. Next, apply sugar to hair in the opposite direction of the growth. Make sure that you feel like your pressing the paste against the skin. Then remove the sugar quickly in the same direction as the hair growth. If the sugaring hair removal process goes well, the hair should come off relatively easy!
